See what your competition is doing - Use them for inspiration not to copy. Do not offer the same as they do, try to make your page a bit different and unique.
It must look good - Both the design of the pages and organisation of the site must be good. Make navigation easy and avoid too many whistles and bells, unless you need them. Content may be king but ugly sites will lose you visitors.
Check spelling and grammar - It sounds obvious but you must proof read your page and check the grammar. No one will think incorrect spelling suggests a reliable or authoritative site.
Have some external links - But not too many. Just link to a few big sites that are not really in competition with you such as wikipedia. It suggests to the visitor you are not afraid of other sites. Just make sure the link opens in a new page and does not take them away from your site.
Update often - Old information, events or news is underwhelming for the visitor. It suggests a site that is unloved and not active. Move pages to an archive section and add a bit if recent news.
Remember other web browsers - Your site is not only viewed using Internet explorer. Firefox and Linux are also used, so check your site still looks OK using them.
Do not forget to market your site - With the many millions of websites online how will yours be found? The cheapest method is to write articles and submit them to article directories. Over time these will build back links and both the search engines and real people will find your site. Persevere and you will be pleased with the result.
